SPOILER WARNING: Plot details for Solitaire follow. Caution is advised!

It's funny because it's true.
―Tori

Victoria "Tori" Annabel Spring, portrayed by Jenny Walser, is the protagonist and narrator of Solitaire, as well as a main character in Heartstopper. She's best friends with Becky Allen for most of Solitaire and has a friendship group which she refers to as Our Lot.

Appearance

Alice imagines Tori having "quite a bony face - sharp cheekbones/jaw and pointy chin".[1] She's 5'2" tall[2], has chin length black hair, and tan skin. She used to have long hair, but she had it cut during Chapter 5 of Heartstopper, before the events of Solitaire.

In Radio Silence, the narrator described Tori's hair to be a weird shade of black or brown, with a thick fringe concealing her eyebrows.

Personality

Tori is an introverted, very cynical, and pessimistic teenager. She enjoys watching movies and blogging on her laptop, which is almost always near her when she's at home. She's very caring of Charlie. She is very observant and always questions things. Though she seems pretty aware of how the "world" works, she's very indifferent to the idea of doing things such as having a boyfriend to place her higher in the social hierarchy of her school, even stating at one point that the majority of the students at Higgs are soulless, conformist idiots.

Tori's narration is sardonical, and she has the tendency to dislike other people simply for looking happier than she feels. Despite being part of a friend group, she feels alienated, not quite knowing where she fits in.[3]

Tori prefers to be blunt. Ironically despite her seemingly uncaring personality, she actually cares more than she lets on and is disgusted at apathetic people. She genuinely cares about the people she loves, and sometimes berates herself for not treating them well, sometimes even thinking that she doesn't deserve them. Her pessimistic attitude caused problems with her relationships to the other characters. Though her negative outlook in life seems to have been an effect of mental illness, this only became apparent during the final scenes of the book.

History

Solitaire

Tori is the main character and narrator of Solitaire.

Radio Silence

Tori appeared as a cameo character near the end of Radio Silence during Aled‘s event. She recognized Frances from the party they went to years ago and they reminisced about their time at Higgs and how they are glad that it is over.

Heartstopper

Tori is the older sister of the main character Charlie. She first appears in chapter 2 of the comic and is seen every now and then throughout the series from there. She often appears in front of Charlie and when asked how she is everywhere all the time, she responds with "older sister magic".

Trivia

  • Tori was the first Osemanverse character to be created.[4]
  • Tori likes Star Wars.
  • She likes cats.
  • She used to play the violin.
  • Her favorite color is black.[5]
  • Her blog, chronic-pessimist, is a real blog that can be visited and sent asks. It is set a year before the events of Solitaire, which would be in 2010 following the original Solitaire timeline. However, it was since closed down in 2017, as Oseman admitted that it had to end at some point.
  • Until I Was Born For This came out, she appeared in every single one of Alice's stories, and she was the only character to do so.
  • Lucas initially called her "Victoria", which could mean she didn't start using "Tori" until her teenage years.
  • Charlie is the only person who still calls her "Victoria". (Not counting Michael and Lucas, who stopped calling her Tori at some point in the book.)
  • Her MBTI type is INFJ/The Advocate.[6]
  • Her Hogwarts house is Hufflepuff.
  • If she could swap lives with anyone for a day, she would choose her youngest brother Oliver.
  • Alice has said that although Tori canonically identifies as straight in Solitaire, she personally thinks Tori is actually on the aro/ace spectrums.[7] In a Tumblr post, Alice confirmed that ace Tori will become canon in Volume 5 of Heartstopper and that she wasn't aware that asexuality was a thing back when writing Solitaire.
  • Her favourite musical artist is Radiohead.[8]

"I’m not saying that everyone fits into one of these groups... I mean, I don’t know where I’d go. I suppose I’d be group three, because that’s definitely what Our Lot are. Then again, I don’t feel very similar to anyone from Our Lot. I don’t feel very similar to anyone at all."
